Small outline heart on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, single-line outline of a heart sits on the wrist of a hand held against another hand. The linework is thin and even, in black ink, with no shading or fill. The soft, out-of-focus background and the dark sleeve frame the tattoo at the centre of the photograph.

Dear Tom, the tide came over the slipway again on Tuesday and took the bench your father sat on every evening, so you will have to take my word that the harbour is still standing. I did the thing you asked. I walked down to the breakwater with the ink pen from the post office, the one with the chewed cap, and drew a heart on the cold stone where the lamp post meets the wall, small enough that the gulls would not bother with it. It is only a line, nothing filled in, because you always said the sea would have the colour out of anything. It looked foolish with nobody watching. Then Jack Ellery came past with his dog and asked what I was scribbling, and I told him it was a promise. He laughed and said it was the most Cornish thing he had heard all week, which made me cross, because we are not Cornish. We are from the far side of the estuary.

I am not writing to complain. I am writing because the boat is due in on Friday and I have decided I will walk to the end of the wall with you, the way we did when we were small enough to be scolded for it. Bring the thin wool gloves if you still have them. The wind off the harbour mouth takes the feeling out of everything in March. Your mother has kept the kettle warm since New Year, so you may as well come and drink from it.
