Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A cropped photograph of a woman's upper body in a burgundy velvet slip dress with a sheer mesh yoke. A small tattoo on the outer upper arm shows the word BIG written vertically beside a thin outlined hand. The linework is light and grey on skin, and the plain backdrop keeps attention on the tattoo.

Her name was Dulcie and she came to us from a bankrupt zoo in Lincolnshire with one ear torn and a temper like wet gunpowder. Every evening Old Frankie walked her into the ring, and every evening he held his hand up to the crowd, thumb to finger, the way a man shows the size of the catch that got away. Big, he'd say, and the word went up into the rafters like smoke. Big as a barn. Big as the moon over Skegness. The children believed him, and so, God help us, did the bank.

The season the bank came for the poles, Frankie stopped waving. He sat on an upturned crate by the lion cage and stared at his own hand as if it had betrayed him. Dulcie leaned her great grey head against the rail beside him. Nobody had to tell her the tent was going.

On the last night the crowd was four people and a dog. Frankie raised his hand anyway. Big, he said, very quietly, and Dulcie lifted her trunk and trumpeted so the whole canvas shook, and for one breath the old tent looked enormous again.
