Don't look at me like that. The lift was out again and I've climbed nine floors with a bad hip to tell you this properly. Sit down on the step. Right. The summer the council painted the east face of Harrowgate House that wet green, nobody had asked for a garden, least of all the boy on fourteen who grew hibiscus in a tin bath on his balcony. He'd carried the cutting up from the market on Lessing Road in a carrier bag, and it came up out of the soil like a fist opening, big and orange and foolish.

Those blooms don't stay in pots, see. Within a month the stem had found the drainpipe, then the railing, then the cracked gutter at the seventh floor, and wherever it touched concrete it put out petals the size of a dinner plate. Mrs Okafor on six swore it leaned towards the sun like a dog wanting its supper. The caretaker came with a saw. The boy came down with his palms full of cuttings and said, "Cut it and it just comes back wider." The caretaker had been fighting damp for thirty years and found he had nothing to say to that.

By October the flowers had reached the twelfth floor, big outlined blooms with shadows pooled in their folds, and the council sent a letter about the hazard. The boy read it aloud on the stairs. Then he went up and wrote his reply in the petals, one for every household in the block, and by the time the surveyor came the whole east face was ringed in soft grey shadow and nobody could tell where the leaves stopped and the walls began.

They never took it down. Ask anyone on the estate. If you look up from the car park on a still evening you'll see the flowers still climbing, holding that grey building together with one orange thread, and the lift still broken. Now give me your arm.
