Small yin yang on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black yin yang symbol sits on the upper arm near the armpit of a person lying down. The symbol is filled in with black ink and has a clean, simple outline, with no shading or other detail. The surrounding skin is warm-toned, and the grey knitted sleeve with white ribbed trim and loose hair fill the frame.

The lighthouse keeper's ledger was missing its last page, and Marisol had been sent to find it because nobody else in the Limehouse office could read the old hand. The fog came off the river in grey sheets. She walked past the pawnshop on Narrow Street, where a man in a camel coat was arguing with a cat about a bicycle wheel, and let herself into the bookbinder's back room with the key Mr Okonedo had pressed into her palm that morning.

The ledger was there, under a stack of unsold almanacs, wrapped in oilcloth. The last page had been torn out in a neat half-circle, the way a girl tears a ticket she means to keep. Someone had folded the scrap into quarters and tucked it inside the back cover. Marisol opened it under the bare bulb. Two columns of figures, and between them a small black disc, half filled in one side, half in the other, with a dot of white at the heart of each curve.
She knew that mark. Every crate that came up from the docks was stamped with it, and every crate that went missing had it scratched on the lid afterwards. Okonedo had never told her what it meant. He had only said that the lighthouse keeper was a sensible man who had counted everything twice.
She copied the figures onto her own cuff, folded the page back into the ledger, and walked out past the sleeping cat. At the corner, a tram bell rang once across the water, and she realised the circle had been balanced the whole time, one half always chasing the other, and the thing that had gone missing was the ledger's honesty, not the page.
