Fine line script quote on inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a forearm with a thin, handwritten-style script tattoo running diagonally up the arm, reading courage dear heart. The linework is delicate and even, with black ink only and no shading. The sleeve of a knitted jumper is pushed up near the elbow, and a watch is visible on the wrist at the top of the frame against a window background.

The gulls over Porthcurno are fat with the herring that came in on Tuesday, and Mrs Pascoe has taken the second bedroom for the summer lodgers, which means I sleep in the scullery by the copper with the cat.

Yesterday the lamp failed at dusk. Nobody knew how to climb the iron stair to the gallery but me, because you taught me the trick of the wet rope and the oil can when I was nine and sulked that I was not allowed. I went up with a candle in a jar, the wind pulling at my skirt like a tethered dog. The mantle had cracked. I sat on the cold floor and fitted the new glass by feel, my fingers gone numb, and when the beam swung out over the black water I heard the men on the quay cheer as if it were a wedding.
Nobody called me brave. Mr Hosking brought a pasty up the stair in the morning and said the lamp had saved two boats, and then he asked whether I could do it again next winter. I said I would think on it. I have a feeling I will say yes.
So do not fret about the rent or the cat. I have the pencil you sent and I have written the words you gave me on the inside of my arm, where I can see them when I fill the lamp. Courage, dear heart. It looks a bit like a fishing line when I write it fast, but it holds.
