Smoky skull flash sheet
Black and grey · Flash
A flash sheet of several skull designs, each wrapped in swirling smoke or flame. The linework is soft and loose, with heavy grey shading that gives the skulls depth and an airbrushed look. Only black and greys are used on a plain white background, arranged in a grid of separate designs.

The abbot wanted the dead to look like weather, so Brother Edmund spent the Lenten nights bent over a board of limewood in the scriptorium, working with a sable brush no thicker than a barley stalk. Outside, fog pressed against the shutters from the fens. Inside, the only light came from a tallow stub jammed in a bowl of sand, and its smoke curled past his face and went wherever it pleased.

He had begun the way the rule required, with bone-white skulls set square on the page, the sort the brothers at Norwich painted for the infirmary walls. But the smoke kept getting into his lines. Each time he lifted the brush he saw a jaw forming in the soot on his thumb, and when he tried to paint it clean the wick guttered and the skull came out soft at the edges, wrapped in its own slow stir of grey.
Prior Hugh came in at compline with his hood up and stood behind him for a long while. "These are not what I asked for," he said. Edmund waited for the rebuke. Instead the prior lifted the board to the window and tilted it until the last of the fog light ran over the wash. "Leave them," he said at last. "The dead have never once looked like they were in the room."
After the prior had gone, Edmund finished the final skull by feel, the candle drowned in its own wax. In the morning the sheets dried stiff and grey, and when the sun came through the chapter house glass each skull seemed to breathe out a thread of smoke that had not been there when he painted it.
