Smoke-wreathed skulls flash sheet
Black and grey · Flash
The sheet shows numerous skulls, some in profile and some facing forward, arranged in three vertical columns and partly emerging from billowing smoke or flame. The linework is soft and the shading is airbrush-like, using smooth gradients of grey to build up the bone and smoke. The design is entirely monochrome and fills the frame edge to edge.

The customs man at Harrow Ford had counted forty-one skulls coming up out of the marsh smoke that spring, and not one of them carried papers. He stamped his ledger anyway, because his father had stamped ledgers and the river did not care what a man wrote down. They came in threes and fours, grinning or grieving depending on the wind, their jaws still working as if they had one last argument to finish on the far bank.

Old Maud who kept the toll-house said the smoke was the burning of every field the dead had walked through on their way to the border. Each one wrapped itself round the skulls like a coat that would not come off. She said you could tell a stranger by how little smoke clung to him, and that the honest ones were the ones who looked back.
One April a girl named Ines Carrow came to the bar with a sack of wet coal and a dog that would not stay behind her. The customs man asked what she had to declare. She said nothing, only that she was looking for her brother, who had walked into the marsh in March carrying a lamp and no coat. He had not come out the other side.
The customs man turned the ledger to a clean page. He wrote her name, then her brother's, then, after a long moment, his own. The smoke thinned over the ford, and the skulls went down quietly into the reeds, all facing the same way, toward the lamp in her hand.
