Snarling tiger and clouds across the chest
Realism · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A snarling tiger with an ornate metal collar fills the centre of the chest, its striped fur and open jaws shaded in fine greys. Swirling cloud shapes in grey and soft pink surround the head, and a scroll-shaped panel with characters sits to the right. The composition is dense and symmetrical, with smooth gradients and a few warm pink accents.

The pass road above Lin Wu had been closed since the thaw, and Old Tan still climbed it every dawn with a lantern and a bundle of prayer scrolls tied to his back. The tiger that lived in the cloud forest had taken two goats that spring and a boy's dog, and the magistrate in the valley town had sent a letter instead of soldiers. Tan read the letter aloud to his granddaughter, Mei, who was seven and unimpressed.

On the ninth morning the mist came down thick as wool, and the tiger was waiting on the path. It did not charge. It sat, its collar of old beaten bronze catching the lantern light, and stared at him the way the magistrate's clerks stared at unpaid taxes. Tan unrolled the first scroll. The characters said that the mountain had a keeper before it had roads, and that a keeper who forgot his duty would be remembered by the clouds.
He read them all, slowly, until his voice went hoarse. When he finished the last line, the tiger lowered its great head, sniffed the scroll, and turned away into the white. Tan walked down the mountain with his knees shaking, expecting the valley to ask questions he could not answer.
Mei was waiting at the gate with a tarnished bell from the dead dog's collar clutched in her fist. "Did it listen?" she asked. He said it had, and she nodded as though she had known all along, then hung the bell on the peg beside the door, where the lamp could catch it.
