Roaring lion on an upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large roaring lion covers the upper arm and shoulder, with its mane radiating outward in angular, faceted lines. The muzzle, teeth and fur use dense dot stippling, while the face and mane are shaded with fine grey wash and hatching. The design is shown in black and grey, filling most of the frame against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The roar comes up through the beech trees before the light does, and by the time you reach the stile the whole village has its shutters open and its dogs gone quiet. Nobody has seen the lion since the travelling menagerie pulled out across the flooded ford in the spring, leaving behind a cage with its door hanging by one hinge. Mrs Ashdown says it is dead. The boys say it has grown a mane of holly and eats the charcoal burners' bread. You take the tinsmith's shears from the forge, a lantern, and the heel of yesterday's loaf, because your father always said that anything that roars is also hungry.

The wire is what finds you first, a twisted snare strung between two birches near the old charcoal pit, and then the animal inside it, its flank rising and falling beneath a coat knotted with burrs. Its mane is not hair at all in the lantern light but a fan of angular, splintered shadow, as though someone had folded the forest into points and set them around its head. It does not charge. It opens its jaws wide and roars, and the sound rolls off across the valley in a way that makes your ribs ache, and then it lowers its great head and waits.

You kneel in the bracken and cut the wire one strand at a time, speaking the way you would to a horse with a stone in its hoof. When the last loop falls away the lion stands, shakes the leaves from its mane like a man shaking rain from his coat, and looks at you for a long moment with eyes like cold coins. Then it turns north and is gone.

In the village they ask whether you were afraid, and you tell them it was only a lion, which is true enough. Each evening after that you hang the lantern in the forge window. Some nights a roar comes back from the far hills, fainter every time, until one morning the baker finds a snare of rusted wire coiled neatly on his step, and beside it a single curved claw of holly, polished smooth as bone.
