Snarling wolf head on the side ribs

Traditional · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A snarling wolf's head faces left, with open jaws, bared fangs and a raised, bristled ruff of spiky fur. The linework is bold and black, and the fur is built from solid black fills and grey shading. The design fills most of the frame on a torso with some body hair, and the image is in black and grey only.

The wolf came in on the 22:14 from Settle, which is the only train that ever brings anything unclaimed to Carrow Junction. Nobody had booked it a seat. It sat on the bench under the clock with its ruff up like a bad-tempered hedge, and when Ada from the buffet offered it a sausage roll it showed her every tooth it owned.

I signed it into lost property because the rules say everything gets signed in. Under Reason Found I wrote Animal, and under Owner I wrote nothing, because the thing had no collar and no interest in being owned. Ada said it smelled of wet slate and of the pine trees above the viaduct. I said that was not a reason to keep a wolf in the cage with the umbrellas.

It stayed three nights. On the fourth morning the cage was open and the bench was empty, and the ticket office had a single ticket issued at 05:40 to a destination nobody could find on the board. Printed on the back, in pencil, someone had written: Collected, thank you, do not leave the gate open.

I still sign things in. Under Reason Found I write what I can, and under Owner I now write my own name, which feels right on the nights the wind comes off the moor and the station lights hum like something deciding whether to howl.
