Lion head with flowing mane on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A lion's head faces forward, framed by a full mane rendered in fine, layered strands. The face is shaded with soft grey stippling, while the mane uses dense hatched lines that darken toward the edges. The design is set against plain pale skin and a light background, which keeps the tattoo as the clear focus.

Dear Nell,

The lamp has gone out twice and I've lit it again, so forgive the smudge. Your mother has pinned the veil to the back of the wardrobe door and told the vicar's wife she'll be sorted by ten, which means she hasn't slept either. Your dad is in the garden with a torch, talking to the hedgehog he insists is called Gerald.

Do you remember the lion on the Ashworth gatepost? The one with the mane cut in ridges like a ploughed field, that you swore was thinking about its dinner? Tomorrow you walk past it on the way to St Mary's, and I want you to look at it properly. Old Mr Pell told me the carver ran short of stone twice, so he cut the mane in strands no thicker than a bootlace and left the face soft. A lion only looks fierce from a distance, he said, and that is the trick of all of them.

When I married your grandad I walked past that gate with my good shoes in my hand, because the cobbles had split my heel and I was too proud to limp. I was furious. He stopped, picked a flake of lichen from the lion's ear and said it was the only thing in Ashworth that had ever stayed put for him. I thought him soppy. I was right about the soppy and wrong about the lichen, because that gatepost has outlasted us both and the lion's ear is still green.

So eat your toast, put the ring in your left pocket where you can feel it, and when the stone face catches your eye, don't hurry past. Stop for one breath. Then go and be married.

Love, Auntie Ruth

P.S. Gerald has been seen again. Your dad is beside himself.
