Right, so you want to know about the trainers. Everyone wants to know about the trainers. Mum said they were a waste of forty quid, Dad said they were a waste of a good Saturday, and Gran said nothing at all, just tied the laces twice and looked at me over her specs like she already knew I'd lose one.

The disco at St Brendan's was the Friday before half-term, and Mr Okafor from Year Nine had promised to play the one song that made the whole hall go mad. You know the bit. The lights go red and white and blue, the floor shakes under your feet, and the whole year shouts zig a zig ahhh at the ceiling like the ceiling owes them money. I had the trainers on, blue and red and white with the black soles, and I'd spent three lunchtimes practising the spin where you lift one foot off the ground and pretend it was your idea.

Halfway through the chorus the left lace came loose and wrapped itself round my ankle like a ribbon round a maypole. I went down like a dropped coat. Everybody screamed the chorus at me, which I suppose was the kindest thing a hall full of twelve-year-olds has ever done. Then Gran's voice came crackling over the speaker, because she was the caretaker's wife and nobody on earth could stop her, saying, 'Tie it properly, pet, or you'll never get up again.' So I knelt there under the sparkly lights, did a double knot and a loop for luck the way she'd shown me, and got up to finish the song.

Afterwards the loose ends were still trailing from my heels when I walked out into the car park, bright as party streamers, and I didn't bother tucking them in.
