Dougal the Great had pulled me out of that hat every Tuesday for six years, and every Tuesday the hat fitted a little tighter. Nobody warns a rabbit when the ears start to bend against the lining. You just find yourself stooping at the stage door, folding your long ears flat like a pair of umbrellas, and the stagehands start calling you Mister Crumple.

The night it finally gave way was a wet Thursday in Margate. Dougal lifted the brim, wiggled his fingers over the crowd, and I came up through the crown with a noise like a cork leaving a bottle. The hat stayed where it was, sat on the boards like a dropped pudding bowl, and a child in the third row shouted, 'Look, it's stuck to his head!' Dougal reached for the brim with a face like a shop shutting early.

I went out the stage door before he could work out a new trick. Behind the Pavilion there is a bin full of unopened carrots and a fox who owes me money. I sat on the kerb with my ears loose and my tail numb, and I found I did not mind the cold at all. For once my whole length fitted under the sky.

Next Tuesday there was a new rabbit in the hat, a smaller one called Pip, and Dougal told the local paper that rabbits are simply not what they used to be. I took the bus to Ramsgate with one carrot in my pocket and the old hat under my arm, which I wear sideways now, because a hat is only a hat once you have grown out of it.
