Solar system with sun on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A solar system wraps around the forearm, with a sun featuring a face at the centre surrounded by concentric orbit rings. Planets, including one with rings, sit on dashed orbit lines, and small dotted clusters suggest an asteroid belt. The linework is fine and the planets are shaded in grey, with the dashed orbits appearing in a reddish tone against the skin.

Nobody had come to the reunion for the buffet, and by half eight the sausage rolls were going soft under cling film in the Methodist hall in Hebden Bridge. Dinah stood by the trestle table with a paper cup of warm squash and watched Mr Ashdown's old orrery turn slowly on its stand, the way it had turned every Thursday in Room 4 when they were eleven. Someone had found it in the caretaker's cupboard. The brass sun still had its painted face, worn pale at the nose where a hundred hands had brushed it, and the red thread orbits had faded to the colour of old rust.

"You still owe me Saturn," said Kieran Roper, appearing at her elbow with a beer he had clearly smuggled in. "Fourth of June, 1994. I had the ring in my pencil case and you had the planet in yours."
She remembered. The ring had been a sixpenny washer painted silver, and the planet a cork ball with a bead for an eye. They had been told to keep their parts safe until the end of term, and she had lost hers down the back of the radiator the very week the school closed for the summer, and had never told anyone. She opened her handbag, and found, tucked in the zipped pocket where she kept her bus pass, a small grey bead on a length of thread.
Kieran laughed, not unkindly, and then stopped laughing when she held it out. "You kept it."
"I kept meaning to give it back," she said. He took it between finger and thumb and turned it to the light, and for a moment the orrery's little sun seemed to catch it too, as if the whole cheap machine had been waiting thirty years for someone to put a planet back where it belonged.
