Solar system orbits on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A solar system design runs along the forearm, with a engraved-style sun with a face at the centre and planets, including one with rings, set on dashed orbit lines. Fine black linework and stippled dots form the planets and asteroid belts, with small touches of shading. Red dashed orbit lines add a second colour against the pale skin, and a red top and jeans appear at the edge of the frame.

The sun had a face, and everyone in Carrow Gap knew it, because it came down to drink at the spring each morning once the pass was clear of snow. Old Maud Heskett kept goats on the north shoulder and said it was the only neighbour who never borrowed salt.

Its roads were rings of grey stones the shepherds had laid around the high tarn, one ring for each wandering light. There were nine rings, though the outermost had been added late, after a boy came home from the coast swearing he had seen a cold planet with a belt of dust about its middle, like a hay band round a bull. Nobody believed him until the stones were counted and one ring was found to be wider than the rest.

Each light kept its own road. The small grey one went round quickest and was always in a hurry to be somewhere else. The one with the ring was slow and vain, and it took the best part of a lifetime to finish a single circuit of the pass, so the shepherds only saw it lift above the ridge once or twice.

Maud's grandson Tam climbed up one winter to ask the sun for the weather. The sun said the pass would hold if people kept to their own roads and stopped crossing each other's paths with cattle. Tam went down and told the valley. They laughed, and in March the drovers cut through the stony belt at the foot of the gap anyway, and the snow came down on them. Tam climbed up again, and the sun, pleased, lit the ringed planet so the whole valley could see it. The drovers took the long way round after that.
