Soldier silhouette with torn flag on calf
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A dark silhouette of a helmeted figure in profile fills the centre of the design, with the upper body and arm shown in solid black. A distorted American flag appears to stream out behind the figure, with red stripes and a blue field of white stars breaking up into ragged, painted strokes. The tattoo is shown on a lower leg, with the solid black shapes dominating and the flag colours sitting on the right and left edges.

The stencil had been Walter's idea, a black figure in profile with the helmet square on the shoulders, set against a flag he had been painting for the Legion hall since the spring. Mrs Abernethy wanted the stripes to pour out behind it like a banner in a gale, and her late husband's enamel sign leaned against the wall beside the board, its paint worn to bare metal at the corners.

Walter had lettered shop fronts and feed merchants' vans across the valley for forty years, and nobody had ever asked him for ragged edges. Each time he dragged a dry brush down the red, the paint broke into streaks like rain on a windscreen. Each time she said it was right, that was how it had looked in her kitchen the morning the letter came, and he did not ask her which letter she meant.
On the last evening he sat with the board across his knees and a rag in his fist, wiping back the blue so the stars came through the dark. The stars he painted grew smaller as they went towards the edge, until the field gave out and he left it there, a ragged line where the stars simply stopped.
The hall smelt of floor polish when they hung it on the Saturday. Mrs Abernethy stood under it a long while, then touched the torn edge with one finger and asked if it would hold. Walter said it would hold, though the paint would stay tacky for a week yet, and she left a small print on the varnish that he decided to leave alone.
