Bald eagle and American flag on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A bald eagle in profile fills the upper arm, with its yellow beak and feathered head rendered in soft shading. The American flag sits behind and around the eagle, with blue stars on the left and red and white stripes curving across the arm. Colour ink dominates, with fine gradients in the feathers and the flag creating depth across the shoulder and upper arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dorothea Vance had the ovens lit by four, the way her father had taught her, and by half past she was shaping the last of the rye when she noticed the flagpole across Mill Street had a visitor. A bald eagle sat on the crosstree, dark against a sky that was only beginning to grey, its white head turned toward the river as though it expected a boat that was running late.

It came every morning after that. The flag on the pole had been torn in the March gales, and Dorothea had climbed up with a borrowed harness and a sewing kit to stitch the split stripes back together, her fingers numb and her heart loud in her ears. She remembered the bird lifting off the rail as she worked, unhurried, and settling back once she was down again. Her husband Ray had called it a nuisance. He had also, every spring, repainted the blue field of stars by hand, one white point at a time, because he said a flag should look like it meant it.

This morning the eagle dropped from the pole and landed on the awning, the red and white canvas sagging under its weight. Dorothea set down the peel and went to the door with flour on her forearms. The bird looked at her with one yellow eye, then at the loaves cooling in the window, then back at the river, where the first barge was nosing around the bend with its lamps still lit.

She cut the heel from the rye, the crust still cracking, and set it on the sill outside. The eagle considered it for a long moment. Then it lifted, circled once over the street, and went down toward the water to watch the barge come in. Dorothea went back to her dough, and the heel was still warm on the sill when the light finally reached it.
