Spank Me script with hearts on the hip
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo reads Spank Me in a flowing script with a small outlined heart at each end. The linework is fine and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The photograph is black and white and close-up, showing the lettering against bare skin next to frayed denim shorts.

Dear Ruth, you will never guess what has happened at Pemberton's this week. Mr Pemberton sent Stanley down to Albert Fenn's sign-writing shop on Tuesday with the order for the new window, and Stanley, being sixteen and having no more sense than a gull, copied the wording off the back of a cocoa tin instead of the slip. So now the tea room on Mill Street proclaims, in gold leaf and the finest flowing copperplate Albert could muster, "Spank Me Tea Cakes", with a little heart either side. Half the parish has walked past it twice, and the other half has walked past it three times to make sure.

Albert swears the lettering is perfect, and I will admit the hearts are very tidy. He says he would never have let a drop of gold go on crooked, and that Stanley should be grateful the mistake was at least a neat one. Mr Pemberton, however, has been in a sulk since Wednesday and will not say the words aloud, only point at the window and make a noise like a kettle. The vicar's wife came in on Thursday to buy a currant loaf and stood in the doorway for a full minute before she asked for it wrapped in brown paper, and she has not been back since.
Then, on Friday, Mrs Holloway from the Women's Institute marched in and ordered six dozen for the church bazaar, and she asked for them in the window box beneath the sign so that everybody could see them. Mr Pemberton nearly fainted into the flour bin. I think the sign will stay up now, because nobody in Mill Street can bear to be the first to take it down.
Write soon and tell me whether Mother still refuses to walk past the shop. I have a feeling she is going in tomorrow just to see the hearts for herself.
Your loving sister, Joan
