Biomechanical leg sleeve in red, orange and green
Thigh · Colour · Photo
Four views of one leg show a full sleeve of biomechanical forms, including mechanical casings, ribbed structures and organic tubing. The linework is bold and dark, with smooth shading that gives the forms depth and a sense of volume. Orange, red and green ink dominate against black and grey detailing, and the tattoo fills the skin from thigh to ankle.

Dear Brother Anselm, the bellows are finished at last, though you would not know it from the noise they make. Prior Edric wanted the great clock in the north tower to strike the hours without a monk hauling on the rope, so for three winters we have been fitting it out with brass ribs, casings the colour of old copper, and pipework that carries warm oil from the kiln room up to the escapement.

The trouble began in March. Brother Tobiah, who sleeps nearest the stair, swore the tubing had moved overnight. I laughed until I saw it myself: a coil of rust-red hose had crept out of the gears and wound round the pillar like a vine, its ridges glossy, and the verdigris on the copper had bloomed into patterns of fern. We drained the oil and scraped everything down, yet still the thing breathes when the bells ring.
Yesterday I climbed up with a lamp to sort it out. The chamber was warm as a forge and the whole machine was pulsing, slowly, the way a sleeper's chest rises. Where the mechanism met the wall, a membrane of orange tissue had grown over the old plaster, veined with copper, and through it I could see the gear teeth turning like something swallowing.
I did not touch it. I came down, lit the candle for Vespers, and wrote this so that someone beyond these walls knows. If the hours ever come late, do not send the new boy up. Tell the abbot the clock is keeping its own time now, and it has started counting in the body of the tower.
