Sphynx cat in an ornate frame

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a hairless sphynx cat with large ears, looking forward, set within a decorative oval frame with scrolls, leaves and a jewel at the top. The cat's head and the background behind it are built from fine stippled dots and small geometric diamonds, while the frame uses clean, bold linework. The design is in black ink on a plain pale background, with the composition centred and symmetrical.

The cat came aboard in Hull with the ice, or so Dessie swore, and by the third week of the North Sea haul nobody could remember a time before her. She was hairless as a boiled egg, her ears folded wide like the flaps of an old wireless set, and she rode the wheelhouse sill as if she had paid for it.

Dessie called her Duchess. The skipper called her a nuisance and fed her herring heads from his own plate. Every dawn, before the nets went over, she sat in the brass-rimmed porthole and stared through the salt glass, her eyes narrowed to gold coins, while the crew hauled the mesh up in wet diamonds of cord and shook the silver out onto the deck.

On the fourth morning she would not come down. Dessie tried the herring, then his own cap, then a shout. A film of spray lay across the glass, and through the crack in the brass the swell was building grey and long, and the cat's whiskers quivered toward it. The skipper looked at the sky, looked at the cat, and ordered the nets back in.

They came home four hours later with the wind on the beam and an empty hold, and nobody lost a hand. Dessie hung a lantern at the porthole after that, and the skipper pretended not to notice when he stopped by and found her there, a small bare figure framed in brass and oak, waiting for the boat to come in.
