Ornamental cat face tattoo design
Black and grey · Flash
A stylised cat face, seen head on, is drawn in black linework within a filigree frame of scrolls and curls that forms a heart-like outline. Two dark oval gemstones sit on the forehead and below the chin, with fine hatching and detail on the eyes, ears and whiskers. The design is set on a plain cream background with the drawing filling most of the square composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The cat arrived at the gatehouse the week the roof came down, picking its way over the fallen slates as if it had been sent to inspect them. You found it in the chapel crypt, sitting upright beside a tomb whose lid had split, its grey face turned towards you with the patience of a clerk waiting for a signature.

Nobody in the village claimed it. The old steward's widow said it had come with the castle, the way the damp and the jackdaws did, and that its markings matched the cat carved on the lintel above the kitchen door, the one with a jewel set above each eye that the Lady had paid a jeweller from Bath to fix in place. Looters pried the stones out in the last war. You never believed the story until you saw the cat's brow, where two dark ovals sat like a pair of thoughtful beetles, and the scrolled iron of the old gate seemed to curl around its ears.
You began leaving it saucers of cream on the windowsill of the solar, where the floor still held and the sun came in sideways through the tracery. Each morning the saucer was empty, and each evening a little more fallen stonework had been dragged into a neat heap by the wall, as though it were building something on the quiet.
By spring the heap had become a frame: a heart of broken scroll and carved leaf, set around the cat's head on the wall where the Lady's portrait had once hung. You stood back with your tea going cold and understood that it had never been looking for a home. It had been waiting for someone to finish the picture. The jackdaws took the cream after that, and you let them.
