Spider on a web with a mouse on a thread

Fine line · Mixed · Flash

A black ink spider sits at the top of a fine-lined web, with a thread descending to a small tan mouse that dangles from it. The spider and web are drawn in crisp black linework, while the mouse is softly shaded in peach and orange washes with pink details on its ears and feet. The subject is centred on a plain white background with generous empty space around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You were only after the crust of a half-eaten pasty someone dropped on the stairwell of Harcourt House, which is how a mouse of your modest ambitions ends up forty feet above the car park, dangling by a single thread. Above you, Mrs Pell sits at the centre of her web like a landlady who has just found a new tenant and has not yet decided whether she likes him.

'Hold still, dear,' she says, not unkindly, tapping the line with one leg. 'I'm only reinforcing the bracing. Every grown mouse in this block has ridden a line at least once. The trick is not to look down.' You look down. The car park is a grey tile, the bins are as small as teeth, and somewhere below a lift cable clanks as though it has opinions about you.

Mrs Pell goes back to her spinning, so you do the sensible thing and start working the thread with your hind feet, the way you once watched a window cleaner's rope climb a wall. The line lengthens. It takes most of an hour, the seventh-floor light flickering each time a door slams, but the thread keeps paying out until the bin lids come up slowly to meet your nose.

When your feet finally touch the lid, the spider's voice drifts down the silk, thin as a hair. 'Mind the fourth floor,' she calls. 'The bins up there are a disgrace.' You tuck the pasty under your arm and, for the first time since the lift broke, the building feels like it might be yours too.
