Honeysuckle sprig line drawing
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A honeysuckle sprig with several trumpet-shaped flowers, small buds, a cluster of berries and oval leaves, drawn along a diagonal stem that curls at the lower end. The work uses fine black pen outlines with small dot details and light hatching on the stem, with no shading or fill. The sprig sits alone on a plain white background, so the composition is open and easy to read.

Dear Tom,

The honeysuckle has got over the back wall at last, and I have stopped pretending I can keep it in its place. It came up the rope you strung for the runner beans and went straight past them, twisting round anything it could find. Yesterday I counted four trumpets open on one stem, pale at the lip and bent back as if they were listening for something. The bees found them before I did.
I cut a sprig for you this morning, the longest I could manage without tearing the wall apart. There is a bud at the tip not yet ready, two flowers gone a little brown at the edges, and a bunch of berries no bigger than peas that will be red by the time you're back. Mrs Pryce says honeysuckle in the house brings bad sleep, so I have kept it out of the bedroom and put it in the jar on the sill of the lamp-room stair, where you'll see it at the top of the ladder. Eli says the relief boat will take it out Thursday, if the swell lets him.
Do not come home early on my account. The vine will be a foot further up the gable by the time you're back, and I have started thinking of it as a measuring stick, the way you count nights on the rock. I will tell you how far it has got.
Love, Ada. P.S. The berries are the colour your lamp goes when the fog comes in. I held one up to the window this morning and thought of you.
