The officer at the crossing lifts the spoon out of your rucksack the way you'd lift a fish from a bucket, two fingers and a frown. It is a plain, tarnished thing with a teardrop bowl, and it has no business being in a bag bound for the other side of a border. "Anything to declare?" she asks. "Only that."

She turns it over. Tucked beneath the handle is a folded index card in your own handwriting, the ink blurred where rain got in on the coach. Before she can stop herself she reads it aloud: "Let me spoon you, love. Kettle's on and you're cold." Somewhere behind her a radio crackles about a lorry shedding its load on the bypass. You want to tell her the spoon was your gran's, that she fed you cocoa with it in the back kitchen while the wind worried the windows, and that you have carried it across three countries so you could hand it to Ilse at the far barrier and finally say the thing you never said.

The officer's mouth loosens. She says her husband used to leave teaspoons on her pillow when he went off on lorry runs, one for each night he'd be gone, and that she kept every one. She doesn't say what happened to him. She stamps your form, drops the spoon into a grey plastic tray, and nudges it back across the counter.

It is still warm from her hand when you pocket it. Behind you the queue has gone quiet, as if everyone has been listening.
