Wand with swirls on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A slender wand runs diagonally across the forearm, with decorative scrolls at the upper end and a handle filled with small scattered stars at the lower end. The linework is thin and even, with the stars drawn as tiny solid dots. The tattoo is in black ink on pale skin against a plain white background.

Dear Tom,

The wind has been off the sea for three days now and Mrs Pell has given up pretending the damp isn't getting into the good linen. I finally opened the tin you left under the stairs. Your wand was inside, wrapped in a grey stocking, with the scrolls at the top bent a little flatter than I remember. I haven't unwrapped it beyond that, I promise, though the stars on the handle caught the lamp and I thought of the night you counted them aloud from the end of the pier.
Mr Ashdown came to the back door yesterday asking after you. He has a rented cabinet of tricks on the pier now, and his assistant has taken the same cough that emptied half the Winter Fair. He offered me two shillings a night to stand in the cabinet and be sawn in half. I told him I would sooner be sawn in half by the tide. He laughed so hard he dropped his hat in the surf and had to chase it down the shingle.
Here is what I have decided. I am posting the wand to you by the Thursday coach, care of the Crown in Whitby, because you will want it for the spring tour and because I don't believe luck ought to be kept in a tin. Write back and tell me whether the stars still come out when you hold it up to the window.
Your loving sister, Nell
