Fine line black tattoo on the side of a thigh showing a stack of three books beneath the script words I've lived a thousand lives.

Stack of books and a quote on the thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A small stack of three books is drawn in thin black outline with no shading, sitting below a line of handwritten-style lettering that reads I've lived a thousand lives. The linework is clean and even, and the ink is solid black with no colour. The tattoo is centred on the side of the thigh against plain skin, with a dark garment and a pale carpeted floor visible at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mule had gone lame below the Cairn Gap, so Morwen Tesh carried the last crate herself, three volumes strapped to her back with greased cord. Snow was coming off the high ridges in long white ropes, and the keeper at the hut would not unbar the door after dusk, so she walked through the blue hour with her head down and her breath loud in her ears.

The keeper, Ansel Rook, let her in only when she showed him the books. He had lived at the pass forty winters and knew the old rule. Every book read on the mountain is a life lived by the reader, and the valley folk paid the toll in exactly that coin. He poured her a cup of barley water and said the trouble was not the reading but the stopping, because a person who closes a book too late comes back to the stove wearing someone else's face.

She read the first book aloud by the fire that night, and for a while she was a ferryman on a brown river, then a widow who sold salt by weight, then a boy who drew birds on the backs of tax notices. Each time she shut a cover she was back on the bench with the stove ticking, a little older, the roof beams a shade lower. By the third book she had lived a thousand lives and could not have said which one was hers.

In the morning she stacked the three books on the flat stone beside the door, spine to spine, for whoever came up the path next. The wind found the top cover and turned the pages slowly, one after another, as if something on the far side of the pass were still reading them.
