Script quote on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a thigh showing a two-line handwritten script tattoo reading Not all those who wander are lost. The linework is thin and even, in a single dark ink with no shading. The soft, warm-toned photo keeps the denim shirt at the top of the frame and a hand at the left edge.

She had been reading the sampler over the back stairs for thirty years, the one her mother stitched in faded red thread, and she knew its words the way she knew the creak of the fourth step. Not all those who wander are lost. As a girl she had thought it a cheerful thing to hang above a stairwell. Now it seemed to be pointing at her, a woman who had never once left Saltcombe except to visit her sister in Plymouth.
Arthur had written that the sea was the only honest thing he knew, that a man could be somewhere new every week and nobody would ask him to explain himself. She read it again at the kitchen table, with the lamp hissing and a tureen of cold potatoes going grey beside her. Then she set the pen down, took the sampler off its nail in the hall, and carried it back to the table in both hands.
She copied the line out under her own name, slanting the letters the way her mother had, and folded the card around the fern. The post cart rattled past the window as she sealed it. Let him wander, she thought, and let the road home stay where it is.
