Stained glass style woman on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A woman with both arms raised sits within an arched frame that resembles stained glass, with leaf or petal shapes filling the lower part. The tattoo is drawn in blue-toned linework with no shading, and the lines are fine and even. The design fills most of the upper arm and is shown in a close, straight-on photograph against plain skin.

The rain started at a quarter to eleven, which is when you were supposed to be home. Instead you are on the scaffold outside St Ninian's with a torch clamped in your teeth, looking at the north window through a sheet of plastic the wind keeps trying to tear loose. Someone has knocked a hole in the lower lights. Water runs down the inside of the glass in a thin silver line, and the woman in the arch, both arms lifted above her head as if the storm were a dance, is getting wet.

The lead came have gone brittle, the blue glass loose in its channels. You work by feel, the way your father taught you on the cathedral job in Hull, easing each petal free and laying it face up on a folded tea towel on the boards. Below the petals the leaves overlap in an endless lattice. Under the fourth leaf, pressed into the lead, is a small scratched initial and a date, 1921. Nobody at the parish office mentioned a restorer before tonight.

You lift the last pane and the wind comes straight through the gap and peels the plastic off like a sheet from a line. The woman's face is turned up, her hands cupped behind her head. You think about whoever set this glass before the war, and how many nights they must have stood here cursing the same rain. You fit the new lead, solder the joints with the iron hissing, and do not stop until the window is whole.

By midnight the rain has eased. You climb down with numb fingers and look back. From the street, with the floodlights off, the window glows blue against the black sky, and for a moment the figure seems to be lifting something up to you, the way you would wave to someone you had just let in out of the weather.
