Dreamcatcher and peacock feathers on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A dreamcatcher with a web of fine black lines and small coloured beads hangs above a large peacock feather with blue, teal and green eyes. A red and orange autumn leaf sits beside the dreamcatcher, with a faded olive leaf behind it. The shading is soft and smooth, with bright colour dominating against the pale skin.

Ruth had kept the stall at Hastings market for nineteen years, and in all that time nobody had haggled over a dreamcatcher the way the boy did. He was eleven at most, in a school jumper with the cuffs pulled over his hands, and he held the hoop up to the grey light as if he could read something in the web of black thread. Her brother had strung it from a wire coat hanger the winter before he left for Canada, knotting small glass beads at each crossing so the light would catch them.

"How much for the feather?" he asked, pointing at the peacock plume pinned to the awning. Ten pounds, she said, which was a lie, because she wanted him to argue. He dug in his pocket and came up with two pound coins, a bus ticket and a leaf, brown at the edges and red in the middle, the colour of a postbox. "It's for Mrs Akande's class," he said. "We're making things that catch things." He pushed the leaf across the trestle table as if it were currency.
She should have said no. Instead she wrapped the feather in tissue paper and tucked the leaf into the hoop, between two strands where the web had torn years ago. That evening, packing up, she found the boy's leaf still there, and beside it the ghost of an olive one she had never noticed, pale as a thumbprint. She left both where they were and took the long way home along the front, the tide drawing back over the shingle.
