Stick 'N' Poke doodle flash sheet
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A sheet of dozens of small, simple black line doodles arranged loosely across the page, with the heading Stick 'N' Poke at the top. The designs include eyes, stars, moons, crystals, skulls, a bicycle, a skateboard, a cactus and a pencil, drawn with thin uniform outlines and no shading. The page is entirely black ink on a plain light grey background, with the designs spread evenly for easy selection.

Nobody at the reunion remembered that Priya and I fought a notebook war in Year Nine. Mine was the back page of a geography exercise book, hers the inside cover of a maths folder, and we passed them under the desks for a whole term until Mr Lusk confiscated both and read the best bits aloud. The class laughed. I went red to the ears. Priya just stared at him as if he had mispronounced her name.

At the reunion, in the function room above the Crown, she found me by the crisps. She still had the ink on her thumb. 'You still draw?' she asked, and I said only on the backs of invoices, which was a lie. What I didn't say was that I had kept a scrap of paper folded in my wallet for twenty years, every shape we had ever swapped: a crescent moon with a sleepy face, a skateboard with one wheel missing, a cassette with its label scribbled out, a crystal that looked like a diamond had lost a fight with a cave.
She took a biro from her handbag and pulled a paper napkin towards her. Without asking, she drew a skull in the corner, grinning the way Mr Lusk used to grin when he caught us. I added a star beside it, the way we always did, and she added a tiny bicycle with a wonky chain. Neither of us mentioned the sun. We just kept drawing while the window behind us went from black to grey to gold over the car park, and by the time the DJ started on the old songs, the napkin had more on it than either of us could have fitted into a whole term of maths.
