A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sunday night at the Coney Lark, somewhere past Skegness. The wind off the Wash has got into the big wheel again, and the cables hum all night like something wanting out. Dad has put me on the fortune tent because Aunt Ivy's hip has gone, which means I sit under a canvas teepee with a painted sun on the flap and a bulb that buzzes like a trapped wasp, selling futures for fifty pence.

Nobody asks for futures. They ask whether the hourglass in the window is real sand, and whether the UFO over the dodgems is a hoax. Tonight a boy of about nine came in clutching a jam jar with a jellyfish he had won at the rifle range, and he wanted it read. I told him it would be a long life, fed on pizza and sunburn, and he looked so disappointed that I gave him the planet keyring from the drawer, the one with the ring that spins.

Ivy says the trick is never to read the stars too closely, because they only ever say what you've already decided. She taught me to lay the cards face down and let the arrow point at whoever is loudest. Tonight it pointed at me, which I took for a bad sign until I looked up and saw the painted sun on the flap had gone dark. The real one was coming up over the marsh, rust-coloured and enormous, exactly where the wheel stopped.

I've written this down so I remember it's mine. The sun comes up whether or not anyone in the tent believes in it. Then I shut the flap and went to find Dad's tea.
