Storm profile and anchor on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A profile silhouette of a head is filled with a dark stormy sea and sky, with waves and cloud banding across the forehead and face. Black rain drips fall below the head, beside a faceted anchor in shades of blue and teal with light outlines. The tattoo sits on the upper arm and shoulder, with blue and black ink dominating and a dark wing-like shape and touches of orange at the left edge.

The anchor had been sitting in the net loft since March, its flukes wrapped in old tarpaulin, when Dorrie Penhale climbed the stairs asking for it back. Jem Penhale had hauled it up from the harbour bed himself after the Sabrina went down in the squall off Trevose Head. The coastguard said the boat was a write-off. Jem said the anchor was still good, and he would not let anyone else touch it.

Dorrie wanted it cleaned and set on the quay wall where the wind could get at it. She had a sketch folded in her coat pocket, drawn on the back of a tide table. It showed a man's profile turned into the weather, the forehead full of cloud banding and the mouth gone to a hard line of swell. Under his chin she had drawn small black drops, one after another, like rain that could not decide whether to fall.
I asked her whether her brother would mind. She said Jem had stopped minding things in February, and that the anchor had never once in its life let go of anything it was meant to hold. Then she turned the thing over in her hands, rubbed a thumb across the crust of barnacle at the shank, and said it would do.
We carried it down together. When she set it on the wall, the first rain of the afternoon came in off the bay and ran down the iron in long dark threads, and Dorrie stood there a while with her hand flat on the cold metal, letting it soak through her sleeve.
