Realistic skull on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large skull is rendered in a realistic style, with the cranium and jaw shaded in black and grey. Fine speckling and dark patches across the bone create a weathered, textured look. The design fills most of the frame against a blurred workshop background with blue tape and plastic sheeting.

Dear Tomas,

The cloister floor came up on Tuesday, and with it the lot of them: forty-one skulls from the old burial ground under the east range, packed in clay like walnuts in a cake. Brother Piers swore we would find the abbot's bones. We found instead a skull that had spent four hundred years in wet ground, and which has looked at me all week through the dark pits where its eyes were.
The bone is not white. It has gone the colour of a wet slate roof, pocked with black where the damp got into it and speckled as if someone had flicked ink across it from a brush. Along the cheek the plates have lifted and curled like old pastry. The jaw is still hinged, though it hangs a little, as if the man it belonged to had been about to say something and thought better of it.
Brother Piers wants it boiled and whitened for the reliquary. I told him the abbey has enough white bone on its shelves to frighten the bishop. This one I will keep dark, on the sill of the scriptorium where the afternoon light comes in low, and I will write its name in the ledger: Unknown, Gilbert's man, buried in the rain.
Pray for me, and send the good ink when the carrier comes.
Your brother, Anselm
