Stronger Than Ever script lettering across chest

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a bare upper chest showing flowing script lettering that reads Stronger Than Ever, with Day After Day in smaller script beneath it. The linework is bold with fine flourishes and soft grey shading, and the text fills the width of the chest between the shoulders. Only the neck and shoulders are visible, with a partial tattoo at the left edge of the frame.

Dear Marnie,

You were right about the hall. The gym still smelt of floor wax and oranges, and Mr Pryce still called everyone by their surname as if we'd all stayed in Year Nine. I didn't get to talk to you properly, so I'm writing instead, which you'll say is typical of me.

What I keep thinking about is Hilary Cosgrove, who sat behind us in chemistry and now paints shop signs in Stockport. She came over with a Tupperware of shortbread and told me she'd lettered the bakery window on Church Street the spring after her husband left. The words run across the glass in that loopy copperplate. She said she'd spent three evenings on the capital S alone, practising on the back of brown paper bags until her wrist ached. Stronger Than Ever, it says, with Day After Day tucked underneath in a smaller hand. She told me she'd rather be the one who made the words than the one who had to read them every morning.

I didn't know what to say, so I said the shortbread was good, which was true. She laughed and told me to stop being so careful with people, that I'd always been the one who saved the crusts for last.

I drove past Church Street this morning and the window was catching the sun, every loop lit up, and I stopped on the double yellows like an idiot. Ring me on Sunday. I'll ask Hilary for the shortbread recipe again, though I know she won't give it up.

Love, Jo
