Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a large script lettering tattoo running down the forearm, with the words Money, Over and Everything in layered flowing letters. The linework is solid black with grey shading inside and around the letters, and the ink is crisp and even. The skin is darker and the background shows a chair, a small white cat and part of a blue cloth.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming sideways across the Saturday market since eight, and the gold leaf on my sign board had gone soft at the edges. I wiped the brush on my apron and looked at the words I'd been asked to letter: Money over everything. A lad from the fish stall had brought the request in a crumpled napkin, wanting it in the old copperplate his nan used on her Christmas cards.

I told him the copperplate would take an hour and the rain would take the rest. He said he'd wait under the awning with the white cat that lived in the bread crates, who had decided the stall was hers. I started with the capital M, the loop of it, and found my hand wanted to make the flourishes bigger than the words could carry. Every stroke I shaded in grey made the phrase look more like a promise than a complaint.

When I finally turned the board round, he didn't smile. He asked if I could make the last word smaller. I asked why. He said his mam had always put everything first, and he was tired of watching the bills go unpaid for her sake. I looked at how the word everything sprawled under the others like something spilled, and I shaded it lighter, let it fade.

He paid in coins, counted twice, and walked off with the board under his arm into the rain. The cat stretched on the crates and watched me as if I'd done it on purpose. I hadn't. But the water had already started lifting the gold from the last word, and by closing time all that was left was Money, shining, and Over, and the thin grey run of everything dripping into the drain.
