Nobody at the Mayfair admitted Bruno belonged to anyone, but his name was painted on the tin bowl by the cloakroom, so I took that as a signature. He had a head like a dropped anvil and a way of lifting his chin at the doors whenever a man came in smelling of the Crown, as if he'd been hired to check the coats and took the post seriously.

Thursdays were for the older crowd. Ivy Calloway, who had taught half of Keighley to foxtrot in a borrowed pair of heels, would stand at the edge of the sprung floor counting under her breath while the band eased into a slow number. Bruno sat beside her shoes with his tail curled up over his back like a question mark, and the couples drifted past in neat little arcs, as though he had drawn the lines for them.

The trouble came in February, when a lad from the mill arrived with his cap pulled low and a bottle in his coat. He pushed past the ticket table and reached for Ivy's elbow. Bruno didn't bark. He simply rose, all shoulders and stubborn bone, and stepped between them with his chin raised, and he stayed there until the lad looked down and found he had nowhere to put his feet.

After that the lad went out into the sleet, the band struck up again, and Ivy danced the last waltz with me because I was the only one who had kept time. When the lights went down, Bruno sat at the edge of the boards with his tail held high, watching the empty floor shine like wet slate.
