The lorry had already been waved through the barrier when Dale Okonkwo noticed that Juno had stopped sniffing and was sitting square in the middle of the lane, staring at the back tyre of the cab. Rain came sideways off the Channel. He had twelve minutes left on his shift and a flask going cold on the bonnet of the Land Rover.

Juno was nine, grey at the muzzle, and had spent six years finding things other people hid. Dale called her name. She didn't look round. He walked over, crouched, and felt the cold of the tarmac through his trousers. Wedged in the arch behind the wheel, where a spare should have been, was a wet cardboard box with air holes pricked in its lid. Inside were four puppies, small and shivering, and not a single bag of cigarettes.

He radioed the driver back. Pavel, a man with cracked knuckles, swore in two languages and then said he had bought them from a stranger in a lay-by because his daughter had asked for one. Dale believed him, which was not the same as letting him go.

Afterwards, when the paperwork was done and Juno was asleep in the back with a puppy tucked under her chin, Dale walked out to the car park to clear his head. Frost had come down. In the white crust by the fence, a line of paw prints ran out from the kennel block, looped round the bollard, came back, and crossed over themselves before stopping at the gate. He stood a long time looking at that figure of eight, and thought it was the only thing on the site he had ever seen that did not need checking.
