Stylised face with lightning bolt on upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A stylised portrait of a face with closed eyes, full red lips and a flat red and black mohawk-style hairstyle, with a blue and red lightning bolt running across the face. The design uses bold outlines and flat areas of red, blue, black and pale skin tones with little visible shading. It is centred on a pale arm against a dark background that shows loose gold-coloured jewellery components.

The bolt always went on last, after the lips and before the wig, because Mrs Abernethy said a face needed its nerve before it needed its hair. On Inchmurrin the ferry came over twice a week, and the Gaiety Hall had one dressing room with a cracked mirror and a gas ring that tripped if you boiled the kettle and the iron together.

Dougal Frew had been the act for nineteen summers, a singer who performed his whole set with his eyes shut, which the Hall's manager called shy and the bingo ladies called rude. He never let me touch the lips. He pressed those red himself with the back of his wrist, then sat with his head tipped down while I laid the blue and the red stripes across his cheek with the fine sable that had belonged to my aunt.
The night the boat was cancelled for fog, we had forty people in the hall and no act to put on. Dougal sat in the chair with the paint half dry and said, "Go out and tell them the storm's on the stage, pet." So I went out with my hair still wet and sang the one song I knew all the words to, while he stood in the wings with his eyes closed, counting the bars under his breath.
When the fog lifted after midnight, the mirror had a long red smear on it where his hand had pulled away. I kept the sable. The bolt on his face had never been perfect, it jumped a little at the chin, and that was the part people remembered, not the hair.
