Three character tattoos on skin

Colour · Photo

This collage shows three tattoos on skin. The left tattoo is a loose, watercolour-style Captain America figure in blue and red with dripping edges. The centre tattoo is a sketchy portrait of a spiky-haired man in pink, purple and blue, with crosshatched marks around the face. The right tattoo is a bright, cartoon-style pin-up woman with red curls in a black catsuit, with cleavage visible and bold outlines.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the rain came through the chapel roof again last night, so the blue on the north wall has run down to the flagstones like a bruise. Mr Adeyemi says I should leave the drips and call it a style. I have decided to let the weather finish what I started, since the fete committee only wants a hero that looks lively and nobody in Cold Harrow has ever cared about a clean edge.

The second wall is for the lad who would not sit still for his portrait. I gave up on his face after an hour and went at the background with charcoal, hatching until he seemed to be walking out of a storm. Pink and violet bled in where the damp plaster took the wash, and I rather like what the damp decided.

The red-haired woman in the black suit I did last, on the stretch of wall beside the old well, because the lady of the castle asked for something bold. Heavy black outlines, gold discs across her belt, and a grin I could not stop painting wider. The village children have already named her Captain Curl, which I am told is an honour.

Tell Dad the castle ghost has not complained yet. If the walls survive the November gales you may come up and see them. Bring your good brushes, the cheap ones fray within a day. Love, Maud.
