Stylised flower bud pencil sketch

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of a stylised flower or bud with three curling petals and a single long stem that tapers toward the bottom. The linework is dark and fluid, with soft grey shading inside the petals and fine vein-like lines across the lower petals. The design sits centrally on a pale off-white background with plenty of empty space around it.

The net comes up heavy on a grey Tuesday off Peterhead, and you are the one who has to kneel in the wet and pick it apart. Cod, a crab with one claw, a boot with no laces. Then, wound through the mesh like a thread someone forgot to cut, a bud on a stem as long as your forearm, pale as the inside of a shell. Skipper Haig calls it weed. You don't argue. You work the stem free with your thumbnail, and it does not tear.

Nobody on the Morven Rose has grown anything in years, not since the boat was bought from a widower in Fraserburgh and the window boxes went with the house. You carry it up the companionway in both hands, the petals still tight, curled over themselves like the tips of a fiddle scroll. Below deck the galley smells of diesel and burnt toast. You wedge it upright in a jam jar of seawater and tell yourself it will be dead by the next tide.

It isn't. Three days out, while the others sleep, the outermost petal loosens and turns slowly towards the porthole. By the fourth morning there is a faint blush at its edges, the grey of pencil going soft in the rain. Haig sees it first and says nothing, which for Haig is a kind of blessing.

When the boat comes in, you take the jar up the hill to your mother's kitchen, where the window faces the harbour and the gulls argue on the slates. You set it on the sill. The stem drinks, and the bud, still closed at its tip, leans out over the water as if it has been waiting to see what you will do with it.
