Line drawing of a fairy with wings
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A single continuous black line outlines a female fairy figure with her hair swept back and two large, sweeping wings. The linework is bold and minimal, with no shading, and the wings are partly filled by a smaller flower-like shape at the lower centre. The drawing is in black ink on plain white paper, with the figure filling most of the frame.

The big top came down in Swindon in March, and by April the only thing still standing in the field was the flying trapeze, because nobody had thought to take it apart. I went back for it on a wet Tuesday with a borrowed van and my father's old spanner. Mrs Okonedo from the council had left a notice on the gate that said the land was sold, though nobody had told the grass. I climbed the ladder the way I used to, one rung at a time, counting them the way Dad taught me so my hands would know when to stop.

The ringmaster's daughter had always said the Ferraro Brothers were the last act with wings, and she was right, though the wings were only ever painted muslin stretched over a wire frame that smelt of paraffin. We flew them on Saturdays for nine summers. Between the sawdust and the kettle drums, you could look up at the high rigging and see a figure hanging in the lamplight, arms out, hair streaming back, the light catching on a dozen pale feathers. From the cheap seats it looked like flight. From the rope it looked like waiting.
I unhooked the last carabiner just as the rain eased. Below me the field was a brown oval with a single white stake at its heart where the centre pole had been. I thought about the flower we had sewn onto the costume in the winter of the fire, a small cloth bloom at the hip that Nell insisted would keep the bad luck off, and how it had never once kept anything off, and how I had loved her anyway for insisting.
I came down the ladder with the trapeze bar across my shoulders, and at the bottom I left it leaning against the gate so the next person would see it and understand that someone had been up there, that someone had let go on purpose.
