The bud on the high ledge of Skerra had not opened in forty years, the old women said, and nobody on the island had seen it bloom. Tomas Greaves climbed to it every spring with a coil of rope and a tin of lamp oil, because his grandmother had told him the vine would fail the boats if no one tended the cliff. He did not believe her, but he went anyway, since the herring were thin and the sea was thinner.

One April the spirals on the stem had turned grey with salt, and the tendrils had curled so tight they could hold a finger. Tomas cut away the dead ones with his knife and talked to the rock the way his father had, complaining about the price of nets and the weather over Ronay. When he reached the top, the bud was no bigger than his thumbnail, and it was leaning toward the water as if it wanted a drink.

He poured the oil at its root, slowly, and waited. Nothing happened, so he went home. The next morning the lower tendrils had unwound by the width of a barley grain, and the boats that went out that day came back heavy with silver fish. Tomas never told anyone what he had poured. He only climbed the cliff each April after that, and the vine kept curling outward, looking for the sea.
