Stylised phoenix line drawing
Black and grey · Flash
A single-weight black outline of a phoenix with its head turned to the left and a long crest of curled feathers. The wings and tail are built from looping, scrolling lines that taper into spirals at the ends. The image is flat black linework on white with no shading or colour.

Mrs Okonedo had sent the drawing back three times, each time with the same pencilled note in the margin: the tail still looks like it is trying to leave. Tomasz Brandt held the sheet up to the forge light and could not see what she wanted changed. The scrolls ran off the page the way they always did, curling back on themselves until the eye gave up and followed them.

He had forged gates in Sheffield for forty years and had learned that a curl which ends in a point is a curl that wants to keep going. So on the fourth attempt he drew the tail differently, letting each spiral unwind into a fine hairline that tapered to nothing against the edge of the paper, as if the bird had simply declined to stop.
She came in on the Thursday with her nephew carrying the old conservatory door, the one with a bird worked into its iron. Tomasz had made it in 1987 for a house that no longer stood. He ran his thumb along the crest and found the place where he had once welded a loop shut too early, a small bead of solder he had never managed to file away.
"Leave that one," she said. "It's the bit that makes it look like it's moving."
He pinned the drawing above the bench that night, beside the door. In the morning he noticed the pencil had smudged where his thumb had rested, and that the spiral now looked less like an ending and more like the start of something.
