Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a single black tattoo showing a stylised Ganesha figure built from flowing, curved strokes, with a small curl at the top and a rounded lower section. The linework is bold and smooth, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The design is centred against warm brown skin, with plain background detail.

The tally boards had to be done before the cage went down on Monday, and Idris Pugh had been at them since the dinner hour, brush loaded with black enamel, the lamp-room door propped open to let the fumes out. Sunil Parmar, who had come up from Leicester to mind the lamps, leaned in the doorway and watched him lay down the first looping curve of a shape that was not a letter at all.

'Who's that meant to be?' Sunil asked. 'Ganesha,' Idris said, not looking up. 'He's the one who wrote down the great poem, because the sage talked too fast for any scribe to keep up. My gran had a picture of him over the kitchen range in Mountain Ash. Said he was the one you called before you started anything that mattered.' Sunil laughed. 'And you're starting a tally board for forty-one men.'

The trunk came next, a long curl that folded back on itself like a lamp wick catching. Idris had painted names for thirty years and knew the weight of a stroke that had to hold under coal dust and rain. He worked the small curl at the crown last, the one that looked like a flame or a question, and sat back on his heels while the enamel shone wet in the gaslight.

On Monday the cage dropped into the dark with the board bolted to the frame beside the shift roll. The god's head caught the light from the lamp hooks every time a man stepped past it, and nobody on the cage said a word about it, though one of them touched the curl at the top with two fingers before he stepped on.
