Swirl-filled butterfly on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black outline tattoo of a butterfly in profile, with curled tribal-style swirls filling the wings and a curled antenna. The lines are smooth and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. The butterfly sits off-centre on the upper back, with the shoulder blade edge and a blurred background visible at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last of the Ashdown pears hung high on the wall tree that year, and nobody in the village would climb it, because old Mabel Venn had said the wind lived up in those top branches. Tomas Reeve, who was eleven and did not believe in winds, went up anyway with a basket on his hip and a rope knotted round his waist.

At the top he found a butterfly resting on a curled stalk, its wings the colour of wet slate and drawn over with loops and spirals like the ironwork on a churchyard gate. It did not fly off. It folded its wings slowly, the way a person folds a letter, and spoke in a voice like paper turning. "You have taken the low fruit every August," it said. "Leave me the highest pear and I will tell you where the frost is kept."

Tomas said he would not bargain with a moth. The butterfly only turned its feeler round, slow as a clock hand, and waited. He thought of his mother's cough and the cold that came down off the hill each night. So he left the small hard green pear on its twig and climbed down with the basket light on his hip.

When the first frost came, the orchard stood white to the fence, but the wall tree kept its fruit. In the morning the village found a single silver spiral etched on the bark where the pear had been, and on the gatepost, a curl of ice in the shape of a wing. Tomas never said what the butterfly had told him. He only kept his hands in his pockets when the wind came up the valley, and said it had been kind.
