Stylised orange lion on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A seated lion with a full mane and a curled tail is shown in a bold, graphic style. The linework is defined by dark outlines and shading uses flat blocks of orange, red and yellow with darker gradient areas, with black accents on the face, legs and tail. The lion fills the centre of the forearm against a plain skin background, with a patterned black and white sleeve visible to the left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Dunn had the scraper in both hands when Ruth came down the slip, and he did not look up until she had asked twice whether he meant to take the lion off or just frighten it. The Mercy Ann had gone out of Skerrow for forty years with that beast on her bow, seated upright, mane painted the colour of a fox in October, forepaws curled over the stem as though it were waiting for a bell. Now the paint lifted in curls like old lino and showed grey wood underneath.

"Owner wants it for the scrapyard pile," Dunn said. "Says the insurers want the bow clean."
Ruth took the other scraper from the bucket and worked at the tail, where the paint was thinnest. Under a flake of red she found an older layer, a yellow so bright it looked wet, and beneath that a faint pencil line where some carver had marked the curl of the tail before he cut it. Her grandfather had cut that tail. She told Dunn so, and he grunted, but he set his scraper down and wiped his palms on his trousers.
By noon they had the tin of orange paint out of the net loft, and Ruth was working the brush into the mane in long strokes, the way her grandfather had shown her when she was small enough to sit on the slipway wall. Dunn did the black on the face and the paws. The gulls came down to watch. When the owner walked the length of the quay at dusk and stopped below the bow, he looked up for a long time at the lion and said nothing, which in Skerrow meant the same as yes.
