The tiger had been sitting at the edge of the mango grove since the drums started, and by the third day nobody in the village could pretend it was only passing through. Pavan's uncle wanted a rifle fetched from the district. The bride's grandmother wanted the rice cooked and the tiger left alone.

Ruhi's grandmother walked out alone at dusk with a basket of red hibiscus and a pot of lime powder. She drew a ring in the dust, wide enough for a cart wheel, and laid the flowers around its edge in a careful wreath. Then she sat down beside it and talked to the animal about her own wedding, sixty years gone, and the husband who had snored through every monsoon since. Nobody heard what she said after that. The men at the gate swore they heard the tiger sigh.
Before the lamps were lit, the tiger stood, stepped across the flowers without crushing a single bloom, and went back into the trees. In the morning a single long whisker lay inside the lime ring, pale as a grain of salt. The grandmother picked it up, pressed it into the folds of the bride's red sari, and said that a tiger who leaves a piece of itself behind has made a promise.
Pavan did not ask what the promise was. He had learned in three days that the old woman's sums always came out right.
