Stylised rooster on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A stylised rooster head faces left, with a red comb, a turquoise eye ringed in red and orange, and a black and grey hatched neck. A thin red outlined music note sits to the upper right of the bird. Bold solid colour fills the head and feathers, with shading and dotted texture on the neck, and the design is shown in close view on the skin.

The council said no pets on the balconies, so Mr Okonedo kept his rooster in the airing cupboard until the morning he decided the bird had earned some sun. Bramble was red as a postbox and mean as a bailiff, and every dawn at six he crowed loud enough to rattle the windows of block C. My mum swore he was the only alarm clock in Dunmore Court that never needed a battery.

Mr Okonedo played a little transistor tied to the railing, and the rooster took a dislike to anything not in tune. When the station drifted, Bramble would turn his good eye on the set, head cocked, and go quiet until it came back right. His eye was turquoise, ringed in red and orange, and he judged everyone by it.
The year the lifts failed for three weeks, Mr Okonedo climbed the stairs each evening with a biscuit tin of feed and a notebook of tunes he was writing out for the kids on the ninth floor. He would tap a single red note on the page and ask me to sing it back. I was twelve and could not hold a tune, and he never once laughed.
When the council finally came to take the birds away, Bramble went quiet for the first time in his life. Mum held the lift for the men with the crate. The next morning at six the windows stayed still, so I climbed up with the tin anyway and found the notebook open on the railing, one red note pencilled at the top and the transistor still playing, a little flat, from the spot where the bird used to stand.
