Sugar skull horse with roses

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A horse head in profile with a dark, flowing mane decorated with three red roses and green leaves. The face is patterned like a sugar skull, with white and grey scrollwork, red accents and dark eye sockets. Bold dark outlines and soft shading give the mane depth, and the design sits centred on a plain white background.

Sit closer, because the wind up at the pass has ears and I do not want it hearing this. The officer at the Paso de la Cruz was called Ruiz, and on the second day of November he found a black horse standing in front of his booth that would not be searched. Its face was painted like the sugar skulls the children carry through the village that week, white as lime, with red swirls round the eyes and a row of small dark diamonds along the jaw.

The owner, a woman named Inés Arbaza, had come up from the valley with three red roses tangled in the mane and a letter folded inside her coat. Ruiz read the letter. It said only that the horse had carried her mother over this mountain in the year of the fever, that it would carry her again when the time came, and that she was sorry for the trouble. Ruiz laughed at that. Then the horse lowered its painted head, very slowly, and breathed on the paper, and the ink ran in a way that stopped his laughing.

Stamp it, she said. It is only paper going over. Ruiz looked down the road behind her, where the snow lay clean and nothing had walked on it for years, and found his hand had already reached for the stamp. Petals drifted off the mane as the horse stepped across the line, and the wind carried them south. I am told they still turn up in the valley every November, dry and red, in the coat pockets of men who have never once been up that road.
