Horse head with roses and pearl necklace design
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a horse's head in profile, decorated with strands of pearls, jewelled pendants and a ruffled collar. Roses and leaves surround the head and trail down the left side of the composition. The image is drawn in soft graphite with bold outlines and light shading on the muzzle and neck, and it is entirely greyscale.

Dana Pryce asked after the grey mare first. Everybody always asked about the grey mare.

Her name on the entry forms was Pearl Dancer, but we called her Duchess, and she was the only horse at the stables who wore a necklace to lessons. Mr Ashby, who ran the yard, said it was for the Christmas gymkhana. It was never taken off. Every Saturday I brushed the strands of seed pearls out of her mane while the others mucked out, and every Saturday she turned her long grey head to look at me as though I had been sent to attend her.
The year we left, the ruffled collar went missing the night before the spring show. We found it three weeks later folded inside the tack room, the lace stiff with dust and a single rose pinned to the front that none of us had put there. Ashby said nothing about it. Duchess stood in her stall with her ears back, looking pleased with herself.
I still have the rose. It sits on my desk now, gone brown at the edges. At the reunion I said nothing about that either, and Dana laughed and said I had always been the one who kept the yard's secrets. I told her she was thinking of someone else.
